This Week's Events in Coeur d'Alene and Surrounds

Dan McCaw and Sons Exhibit

Once a Montana boy, Los Angeles artist Dan McCaw celebrates family and a forty-year career as a professional artist. With his new show at The Art Spirit Gallery in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Dan has teamed up with his two artist sons to create a vibrant, unique show during the month of August. Lauded by Southwest Art as one of America's most respected contemporary impressionists, Dan has traversed a multidimensional journey as a professional artist, one that began in his boyhood town of Butte, Montana. "Colorful is how I would describe my memories of Butte," states the artist. "Butte was home to prostitution, gambling, drinking, Evil Knievel, and copper that poured out of the hills twenty-four hours a day. Butte was home to fantastic people rich in character. Oh how I'm happy to have grown up there." Following in the footsteps of his father and other influential figures in Butte, Dan traveled the west as an iron worker. The trade led him to California, where he began taking classes at San Francisco's Academy of Art University and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. After completing his studies, Dan worked as an illustrator and taught college courses for seventeen years.  At the age of thirty-eight, the artist sold his first painting at an art show in Arizona, and his career in the fine arts took flight. Aficionados of both impressionism and expressionism praise the work of this acclaimed Los Angeles artist, as it marries Dan's traditional background with contemporary style.  Dan's accolades are many.  In the past decades, he has written a book and shown his paintings in over forty solo exhibitions across the country.  And in 2007, Dan received an Honorary Doctorate degree by the San Francisco Academy of Art University.

Today, Dan and sons John and Danny work side by side in a 5,000 square foot studio and workspace in Los Angeles. John, the eldest of the two, is best known for his abstract heavily encrusted earth tone paintings that reflect his background in both art and anthropology. (View a video of John preparing a canvas with a gesso made of gypsum and rabbit glue here.) Danny's style is more representational and impressionistic.  In 2002, he was awarded the Wright Foundation Grant, chosen for the inaugural cover of American Art Collector Magazine and was most recently featured in American Artist's "Top 25 Artists of Tomorrow." In this collaborative space, each of the three artists' paintings is influenced by a constant interplay of ideas, techniques, and materials.  "Together we experience a strong sense of curiosity, energy, spirit, and fearlessness," beams the proud father. "Each artist is an integral part of one another's work."  The best word that describes this creative process?  Alchemy– true alchemy.
