Growing your Own Tree Seedlings Workshop
Occasionally landowners express interest in growing their own tree seedlings for reforestation. There are many possible reasons for this, including: growing trees from seed collected from superior trees on their own property; experimentation with seed sources from other locations; growing seedlings for tree or shrub species which are not available for purchase; growing seedling stock types that can be difficult to find; or simply the satisfaction of having a direct hand in every part of the reforestation process.
The University of Idaho Extension is offering a workshop titled "Growing Your Own Tree Seedlings" to give landowners and others interested in growing tree seedlings a primer on all of the critical steps to successfully grow tree seedlings for reforestation or similar purposes. Topics to be covered include:
· Tree Seedlings: Buy Them or Grow Your Own?
· Choosing Seed Trees
· Seed Transfer Guidelines
· Desirable & Undesirable Seed Tree Characteristics
· Cone Collection (Seed Ripeness, Cone Harvest Methods)
· Planning a Small Nursery (Identifying Objectives & Constraints, Inputs Needed for Success, Types of Seedlings You Can Produce)
· Using Seed in a Nursery (Seed Procurement, Stratification and Scarification, Improving Germination, Seed Management Resources)
· Nursery Cultural Practices –An Overview (Irrigation, Fertilization, Pest Management, & Hardening)
